Why visit Debre Zeit?
Debre Zeit is the former official name still widely used by travelers; Bishoftu is the city's current name. Set in the Ethiopian highlands, it is best known for a cluster of volcanic crater lakes within and around the city.
A day here offers a gentle contrast to the capital: lake viewpoints, water activities, birdwatching and an unhurried lunch by the shore. It also works well as a first or final day in a longer Ethiopia itinerary.
