Our Story

From a small room to a household name in Ethiopian tourism.

Travel Ethiopia is a private, eco-friendly tour and safari company. We were founded in 1994. Our team shows travelers the many sides of Ethiopia — past and present.

We started small. A few staff, one tiny room, a handful of cars. Today we are a leading name in Ethiopian tourism, with more than 40 trained team members.

What sets our team apart:

  • Deep local knowledge of every region
  • Long careers in guiding, planning and logistics

Director's Message

A message from our Director

Our mission is not just to show Ethiopia to the world, but to make every traveler feel its warmth, richness, and authenticity.

Travel Ethiopia logo
Our Logo

The horse - a symbol of loyalty and unfaltering service.

Horses have always mattered in Ethiopian life. Kings were even known by the names of their horses. For the common rider, a horse was more than a working animal — it was a loyal friend in battle.

Ethiopia's history is full of wars and moves. Emperors ruled from roving tent camps, not fixed palaces. Their strong donkeys, mules and horses made this way of life possible.

Our logo carries that spirit forward. It stands for loyalty, trust and steady service to every guest. And if the Julian calendar makes you seven years younger while you visit — take it as a gift from this ancient land.

African Woman Taking Lead

Our Commitment

Responsible travel, always.

Economic Responsibility

Empowering women and local communities.

Travel Ethiopia is the first company in the country to employ female guides, with the goal of empowering women and collaborating with communities.

We fulfill our social corporate responsibilities by collaborating with Meseret Humanitarian Organization, Hope for Women & Children, and WISE (Women in Self-Empowerment). The company also sponsored two young men and one woman from the remote area of Turmi through their college education - they are now serving their community.

Economic responsibility
Environmental Responsibility

Over 300,000 trees planted across Ethiopia.

Travel Ethiopia is dedicated to environmental protection. We have considerably decreased the use of printed brochures, beginning with an office-based digital approach, and intend to depend mainly on digital materials going forward.

The vehicles we use on trips demonstrate our commitment to reducing polluting emissions - we regularly upgrade to new low-emission models. We also brief our guests to reduce plastic water bottle use; we provide large water containers and encourage robust, recyclable non-plastic bottles.

Our tree-planting project is well known across Ethiopia - so far, we have planted over 300,000 trees in local areas plagued by deforestation and erosion.

Environmental responsibility
Social Responsibility

Respecting cultures, supporting model communities.

Travel Ethiopia provides guests with substantial pre-trip information about Ethiopia's social and political climate, as well as specific destinations. All our consultants deliver further written and oral briefings before departure.

Through our website and consultations, we strongly encourage visitors to respect local traditions and practices - especially around privacy and photography. We advise customers not to make promises to community members unless they truly plan to keep them, and not to negotiate unless they have a real desire to purchase.

We enlighten our guests and arrange excursions to local marketplaces that benefit the population. For example, we encourage clients to visit and buy crafts from manufacturers in Awra Amba - a northern Ethiopian community seen as a model for self-help and gender equality.
